Work started on creating the Green in 1948 when local farmers used their machinery to dig out, level and sow the grass. The same Green is used today… what a great job they did. The first ever bowls matches started in 1950, when the clubhouse was an 8 feet x 4 feet garden shed. The present village hall didn’t exist in those days and all the refreshments came from the White Horse Pub, located across the street from the Green. All matches were played within an eight mile radius of Shropham and all games were 21 ends and played with two woods only.
In the early 1960s, the club had £22 in the bank, which was enough to arrange the next seasons matches via letters and the use of the telephone box on Hargham Road. Local farmer and Club Chairman, Mr Harry Thornton sponsored a solid silver cup, which was presented to the winner of the singles competition. This is over 70 years old and still on display.
Much has changed over the years including the purchase of a second-hand wooden building in the early 1990s from the Mattishall Bowling Club. Inside were old bus seats and a generator was bought to power the lights. This same building was renovated in 2007 with a generous legacy from Iris and Derek Chapman. It was given a total transformation in 2018 after receiving a grant from Sport England. This same grant enabled us to buy a ‘state of the art’ mower, obtain mains electricity and an automatic irrigation system, together with tables and chairs for the club house.
